6 berries (blackberries or raspberries)
4 basil leaves (if desired)
¾ ounce freshly squeezed lemon (or lime) juice
½ ounce simple syrup
1 ½ to 2 ounces bourbon (I used Larceny.)
Muddle the berries and basil (if using) in the bottom of a shaker. Add the remaining ingredients to the shaker. Fill with ice and shake.
Once the shaker is very cold and frosty on the outside, pour through a strainer into a rocks glass filled with ice.
Garnish with additional berries or basil leaves.
Yields one cocktail.
